Men’s golf ends fall season with strong tournament showings
The Augustana men’s golf team capped off a productive fall season with a 12th-place finish at the Tulsa Cup in Oklahoma on Oct. 28, closing out a stretch that featured five top-seven team performances — including a tournament victory at the Marauder Invitational on Sept. 30.
At the Tulsa Cup, the Vikings held their own against some of the best Division II competition in the country, carding a team score of 888.
Sophomore Henry Hartquist led Augustana with a tie for 25th at three strokes above par, while sophomore Kaiden Brovold followed in a tie for 44th at six above par. Senior Jacob Stewart tied for 62nd, freshman Derek Anderson tied for 71st and freshman Luke Olson rounded out the lineup tied for 77th.
Brovold said the tough conditions in Tulsa were a good test for the group.
“It was raining downpour and we still had to play,” he said. “You just have to play no matter what the conditions are. Once you’ve done it a few times, it gets easier to adjust.”
Olson added that the event was valuable experience for him as a first-year golfer.
“It was a good learning experience to see the better Division II golfers,” Olson said. “We were right in the middle of the pack, which was kind of fun to see.”
Back in September, the fall campaign started strong for Augustana, which opened the season with a fourth-place finish at the Bemidji State Invitational, recording a team score of 584. Hartquist and Brovold tied for 11th at +3, while Anderson tied for 21st at +7.
A week later, the Vikings placed fifth at the Fall Brawl with an identical 584 team total, led by Stewart’s tie for fifth at one under par. Augustana continued its consistent play at The Jewel Invite, taking seventh with a season-low 576 team score. Hartquist’s performance stood out as he tied for third at seven under, followed by Stewart in 27th and Brovold in 37th.
The team’s biggest highlight came at the Marauder Golf Invite, where the Vikings captured their first win of the season with a team score of 586. Stewart and Anderson tied for second at +2, Hartquist tied for sixth at +3, and Brovold, Olson and others helped secure the victory with steady rounds across both days.
The Vikings followed that performance with a third-place finish at the USF Invite, where Hartquist and Stewart tied for fourth at +3 and continued to lead the team’s strong fall momentum.
Across six tournaments, the men’s team showed a steady mix of veteran leadership and freshman impact. Brovold said he credits the upperclassmen and coaches for helping younger players like himself and Olson adjust to the challenges of college golf.
“They’re prime examples,” Brovold said. “They do their homework, they show us how to manage time and they’re always there to help.”
Olson said his focus heading into the offseason is improving his short game and adding strength before spring play begins, while Brovold plans to sharpen his ball striking and continue building confidence with his short game.
Head coach Mike Krsnak said the team had success in both sustaining momentum and developing depth across the roster.
“This fall was about continuing to build on last year’s success as well as developing our young talent,” Krsnak said. “Our goals for the spring are to defend our title at our home tournament and finish in the top four at conference. Those are two attainable goals that would keep our program going in the right direction.”
With a tournament win, consistent top finishes and a growing sense of team chemistry, the Vikings enter the offseason with confidence and momentum. As the team looks ahead to spring, Augustana appears well-positioned to compete for a conference title.
